Why spend $40-100 to have fake nails done when you can do it on your own for below $30 at home? That’s right! In this post, I will teach you how to do fake nails at home by giving a step-by-step guide on how to get it done.

How to Do Fake Nails at Home Tips & Tricks

Step 1: Things You Need

Before we begin, let’s gather the materials needed for this project. You’ll need:

  • Acetone-free nail polish remover
  • Cotton pads
  • Q-Tips
  • Orange stick
  • A pack of nails that include buffer and glue
  • Nail buffer
  • Nail glue (strictly)
  • Scissors (just in case you need to trim the top of the glue)

Step 2: Grooming

If you had a manicure done within 24 hours, don’t apply the fake nails just yet. The oils in the skin will prevent the nails from sticking and it might even fall off.

When everything is ready, wash your hands first and make sure your nails and cuticles are fully dry. Make sure your nails are nail polish-free and wipe it with the acetone-free polish remover.

The remaining oil on the nail surface will cause the glue to bubble up.

Step 3: Preparation

Assign which fake nail will be most suitable for each of your nails. Try to arrange it by shape to make it easier.

Trimming your nails is also recommended. Buff the surface of the natural nail to roughen it.

This makes the fake nails attach more efficiently. Slowly push your cuticles back using the orange stick.

You really want to be gentle with this once since doing it too fast may cut them and you’ll have to postpone adding your artificial nails.

Step 4: Applying the Fake Nails

I suggest putting the nails to your dominant hand first since it has more control. This makes applying the fake nails to the other hand much easier.

Put some glue on to the fake and real nail. A single drop will do because it will flatten once the two make contact.

Place the fake nail just above your cuticle. Make sure it’s aligned properly since we don’t want crooked looking nails.

Then, press it down onto the nail bed. Hold on to it for 10 seconds to avoid air bubbles from flowing in before you put on the next one.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

We’re almost done! If you managed to apply everything without blemishes, congratulations! You’re a natural.

But a little polishing can always help so take a Q-Tip and wipe around the cuticle. There’s a good chance some glue has seeped out from under the fake nail.

Just like that, you’re done!

If you want to add some flare, you are always welcome to add some color and design to the fake nails. If you’re a beginner, I suggest you avoid using acrylic or gel home kits.

Instead, start with something simple like nail polish.
