Choosing the perfect shape for your nails can be a bit confusing. The choice on whether to get coffin nails, almond nails or stiletto nails should depend on your nail shape as well as personal preference.
Coffin nails have become quite popular nowadays, especially to those who want long nails but can’t quite handle the pointed tip of a stiletto nail. They are also called ballerina nails because of their resemblance to the shoes the dancers wear during performances.

What you need to get perfect coffin nails:
- Acrylic powder
- Acrylic brush
- Electric nail drill
- Nail file
- Polish of your choice
- Cleaning pads (preferably lint-free)
Step 1: Start With A Square
Coffin nails usually have tilted sides with a flat top, similar to how a coffin or ballerina shoes would look in real life. In order to do this, start with square nails. If you don’t have long nails, you can always shape them using acrylic powder. By using acrylic you can choose how long or short your nails will be.
Step 2: Trim The Sides
Since you need a tilted side for the coffin effect, you have to trim the upper sides of the nail. Use a drill or an emery board to shape them.
Set the drill to low and tilt it at a slight angle from the sides. Do not buff the nail in line with the innermost side of your nail so as not to lose the coffin shape of the nails. Trim the flat tip as well to give it a straighter look.
Step 3: Refine With Nail File
If you’re working with acrylic, you should even out the nail curve using a buffer. Use a nail file to refine the nail’s shape. Make sure you are buffing according to the angle of the nail’s curve to mimic the right shape.
Step 4: Paint Your Nails
Once you’ve achieved the perfect shape for your coffin nails, wipe off the fragments with lint-free wipes. Alcohol soaked cotton pads will also do. Don’t forget to massage your nails with cuticle oil or any other nourishing oil. Then paint your nails with the shade you want.
